Explore the drivers shaping the future of sun-protective hybrid makeup

The modern beauty consumer want makeup that treats, protects, and evolves with them. As technology, dermatological research, and innovation continue to converge, sun-smart beauty is is emerging as a key direction for innovation. From skin health to personalised protection, as well as improved sensoriality and long-wear while keeping a focus on sustainability, the future of colour and suncare defends a more holistic approach.

Skin health and smart personalisation

Makeup is no longer just about coverage. It is increasingly used as an extension of skincare. Looking ahead, SPF-infused makeup is expected to incorporate dermatologist-recommended UV filters that protect sensitive skin without irritating it. These formulations may also combine sun protection with repairing or preventive ingredients such as DNA-repair enzymes, antioxidants, probiotics, and barrier-strengthening actives. In essence, it is the integration of skincare benefits into makeup products, such as SPF-powered anti-ageing and tinted moisturisers.

The rise of hybrid skincare products that combine active ingredients with makeup formulations reflects consumers' desire for products that enhance both appearance and skin health. With growing recognition of sun exposure as a key contributor to premature ageing and pigmentation, SPF is gradually finding its place as a natural part of holistic skincare habits.

The bottom line: an SPF in makeup will shift from being a bonus to a core function that supports long-term skin health.
As AI and beauty tech continue to evolve, the potential for highly personalised SPF-infused makeup is expanding. Tools already available, such as PROVEN Skincare’s platform (12) and L’Oréal’s Perso device (13), are paving the way. These technologies analyse environmental data, skin conditions, and individual preferences to deliver tailored skincare and makeup formulations. In the future, similar solutions could be applied to hybrid makeup, enabling SPF recommendations that adjust in real time based on factors like skin tone, UV exposure, local climate, lifestyle (e.g., urban vs. beach environments), and phototype. As personalisation becomes central to innovation, AI-driven capabilities will empower brands to develop tinted sunscreens and complexion products that are both inclusive and highly functional. As AI and beauty tech will continue to advance, SPF in makeup will become more personalised based on skin tone and UV exposure levels. It will be integrated into smart diagnostic tools that adapt SPF recommendations in real time. It will also tune for regional UV levels, lifestyle (e.g., urban vs. beach environments), and even skin phototype. The personalisation trend is also redefining the beauty and personal care industry, with inclusivity and AI-driven progress leading the way.

“Personalisation isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a response to how consumer expectations have shifted in recent years. Many consumers are seeking products tailored to specific beauty goals like reducing fine lines, combating dryness, or achieving a flawless look. 62% of US BPC buyers are interested in hyper-personalised products, and 28% are willing to pay extra for them.” reports Mintel. Improved sensoriality and inclusivity while ensuring long wear

As consumer expectations evolve, there is a growing demand for sun care products that are lightweight, gentle on sensitive or mature skin, and easy to use on the go, particularly in stick and balm formats. (18) These new-generation products feature SPF formulas that are invisible across all skin tones, thanks to advances in non-whitening mineral filters and pigment technologies that improve shade adaptability. Expanded shade ranges also reflect a stronger commitment to inclusivity, ensuring effective protection for deeper complexions.

The demand for multifunctional and hybrid sun care products will keep increasing as it reflects a desire for products that blend skincare benefits into sun care formulas. Products will become even more weightless and breathable, thanks to nano-encapsulation, microfluidic emulsions, and next-gen delivery systems. (17)

Consumers will expect protection that’s undetectable both visually and sensorially.

On the other hand, reapplying SPF throughout the day remains a significant challenge, particularly when wearing makeup. Traditional sunscreens are not always compatible with finished looks, and many consumers are reluctant to disturb their complexion to reapply protection. This gap highlights the need for practical, makeup-compatible solutions that maintain both efficacy and aesthetics. In the future, we can expect the development of SPF-infused setting sprays, powders, and compacts specifically designed for easy, on-the-go reapplication, without compromising coverage or finish. The beauty industry will witness a continuing shift towards multifunctional products, where sunscreens are enriched with cosmetic actives to deliver added benefits, mirroring the evolution seen in moisturisers and serums. (18)

Smart formulations offering long-lasting UV protection, such as UV-triggered film formers or self-repairing barriers, are set to gain traction, bringing greater convenience and improved user compliance.

New evolution in sunscreen from sustainability to new filter technologies

Environmental and ethical considerations will remain key drivers of SPF innovation, with a growing focus on biodegradable UV filters and bio-based emulsifiers. (22) Waterless, solid, and powder-based formats will also gain momentum, helping to reduce packaging waste while enhancing portability.
Sunscreen-infused makeup will increasingly be expected to meet the same sustainability standards as skincare.

New UV filters offering greater stability, broader-spectrum protection, and lighter textures are being developed globally, particularly in Europe and Asia where innovation often moves faster than regulatory processes. In the U.S., the FDA Innovation Act seeks to accelerate ingredient approvals, paving the way for access to more advanced sunscreen technologies. (19)

As these innovations gain regulatory clearance, we can expect the rise of nano-safe delivery systems and high-performance filters - enabling thinner application layers, better pigment compatibility, and improved long-term safety in SPF makeup.
